Little Owl

Outside my window this morning was this little guy.  It stayed out there all day.  It was small, not like a horned owl... is it a barred owl?  I live in Florida.

BIRDS, birds, and MORE BIRDS! :)

My daughter moved her piano lesson time from 3 p.m. on Mondays to 7 a.m. on Thursdays so she could play basketball. When I awoke this morning, my only plan was  to drop my daughter off at her lesson, have coffee and read the next several chapters in the Agatha Christie novel I'm reading. But when I saw this bird (unknown - please help me identify! closer up pics, yet poor quality, under the cut), thus began the rest of my day, and it didn't have anything to do with a murder mystery. Well, unless you count the fish. But even then, it was no mystery. And the other photos are better quality.

I just got offered a 24hour shift!!! And it's at the fire station in Arlington closest to my apartment, so I'd actually not have to drive so far! Let's hope everything goes through correctly. *crosses fingers*

Free Ideas

The thought just occurred to me that a Zombie Jane Austen character would be rather amusing for a Halloween costume. I'll have to keep that one in mind, especially when they come out with the movie and even more people are buzzing about it.

I wonder what kind of zombie they will have in the movie. I do hope they go for the slow, yet very deadly kind. I think that would go very well with the time period.

Amiable

I've never read any Jane Austen before, but upon hearing of Pride and Prejudiced and Zombies and having watched several enjoyable movies based off her books I thought I should go ahead and make the plunge. After all it would be shameful to read the zombiefied version without having read the original first.

Pigeon, originally uploaded by lambtonwyrm.

Amongst the visitors to our bird feeder is a pair of pigeons. This one is the female. The top of the beak isn't as pronounced.

Frigate birds

This morning as I exited church, I looked up to find a flock of frigate birds heading inland from their coastal home. This is sometimes a sign of foul weather approaching. However, they went into a circling formation before heading back to the coast. They were quite high up. The Hawaiians named the frigate "Iwa" (Eeva), which means the thief.

It's not easy to get close to cormorants.

Hence the slightly fuzzy images.

2009 in review

Heh, started the year as a Paramedic. As fast as possible got out of a job I hated. While I'll always be grateful for something that let me pay the bills and work my way through school, I still shudder at how much I hated it there. Took the first EMS job offer that came along, and while doing the weird transport service isn't great, it has it's moments where I like it better than 911. Just wish it was busier.

Joined the Derby Devils and started spending much of my free time chasing fast women.

Broke my leg at the end of March while chasing said women and consequently found out that friends are even more awesome than I previously believed. Breaking leg did 'cause a debt backup and stalled on other plans.

Work put me through Critical Care training so that I could take care of ICU patients. Then dropped the Critical Care job idea... Then switched me to 911 in Arlington, then mostly switched me back with me picking up shifts where I can in Arlington. So I now have way too much knowledge for what I do.

Moved into an awesome apartment that's like a treehouse. I find that I really enjoy just being in it. Still have boxes to unpack though.

Finished the supposed last class of my degree. So now just need to petition to graduate and see if they'll stick to what they told me in class a little over a year ago.

Have really gotten to enjoy the opportunities of my job in seeing people in all walks of life in all sorts of circumstances. The events are also a lot of fun as well.

And work gave me my one year anniversary stuff last week. A couple of weeks early. But with me going on calls as soon as I started school, I've been in EMS for 3 years now. And even with going 3 months without a paycheck, I still made more this last year than I did the year before. O.o And I thought I was gonna take a pay cut when I got into this field. It's all the OT!

So this next year I'm really looking forward to.

A boro owl

I made an owl out of boroscillicate glass last night, well this morning because it was about 2 am. I feel boro is harder to work with because it is a much harder glass and it doesn't flow as well as soft glass. The nice thing about boro is that you don't have to worry about the glass getting shocked and cracking. Soft glass is so shocky which sucks even more in the winter because I have fresh cold air coming in on my workbench. The cold air is needed because you have to ventilate the nasty fumes outside.

Not qualified to be a cashier..

So a couple months ago I decided that I should look for a part-time job since we can't really afford for me to go to nursing school once they yank my student loans away. They are taking them away because I already have a degree from Columbus State and they only give you so many credits you can get a loan for after that. Well, I applied at some places like Target, Lowes, Giant Eagle, and even Walmart. Well, I did get an interview from Giant Eagle for a part time third shift night stock position but of course they never called me back for that. The interview was a waste of time to say the least and those were 20 minutes that I will never get back and I would have preferred not losing them to the human resource hag that talked to me. :( So today I get this rejection from Giant Eagle for a part-time cashier position that I didn't even get an interview for:

Dear Michelle,

Thank you for your recent expression of interest in career opportunities at Giant Eagle. We are always pleased when talented individuals express an interest in our company.

After careful review of your skill set along with the information provided, we have decided to pursue other candidates who more closely match our requirements for the Cashier, PT position. However, be assured we will retain your information so that you may be considered as other opportunities become available.

We appreciate your interest in Giant Eagle and wish you every success in your career pursuits.

So even though it says not to reply I feel like expressing my opinions over this bullshit. I really don't know why I received all this rejection, I only wanted the stupid job for money for nursing school, not a career with their greedy corporation.

Here is my reply and I may even send it to them:

What the hell kind of requirements are needed to be a cashier? Being able to scan a bar code and count money? Anyone that uses the self checkout is obviously qualified for the job in my opinion but I guess that doesn't matter because I am not qualified. I have 2 college degrees, I have been a cashier in the past and even a bartender and my qualifications are not appropriate for a cashier position? I guess you want someone with 20 years experience being a cashier, what a go-getter, well take your $8 an hour drone job and stick it. I didn't want a career with your company anyway. The groceries are too expensive and you have issues getting rid of products for no reason. You suck.

Of course my husband keeps asking why I am still mad about this when it is over. Well, I am sure he would be sort of upset if he spent most of his adult life and over $20k for college and not even be able to meet the requirements for a part-time, night shift cashier at $8 an hour. I wasn't expecting stock options, all I wanted was some chinsy money to help us get buy and pay for nursing school. Oh well, I am done applying at this demeaning jobs, I guess I will just go make beads, at least I won't have to listen to orders from an ass kissing windbag of a boss.
