Piper had a surprise this morning...

He was a new father:

His mate, Fawn, was not up to a photo shoot today. So far they have been excited to the point of exhaustion. The entire colony here at the house, has been a buzz of activity. :)

Feeding Forest

It's been a little while since I've had a baby barn owl for Socrates to help me with. So I went and found a set of pictures to look at again, and thought I'd share.

He always thinks they are "our" babies. And he never eats his own mouse until it's full and sleeping. Makes it easier on me too.. less mice to fillet.

This is Edward.

He is a cattle egret; hatched last Friday night. He had a hard time out of the egg... we talked back and forth through the pip hole in the shell. It gave him the security of knowing that he was expected.

He's doing well now. His begging sounds, though really soft sounding, bring me right to him. He relaxes when I'm near him. I think he does the same for me.

Socrates had been a bit aggressive towards anyone who had come close to the kitchen lately. It never really hit my why. He proved it to me today:

He fed the baby then "beaked" me for approval. Chittering sweet nothings into my ear... he lunged towards the cats and in the general direction of my roomie. It had never crossed my mind that "we" had a baby together.

My new baby won't be fed by Socrates:

He's a baby House Finch. 3 drops of formula and 1/4 a meal worm, he's full. <3

It takes patience.. but he's so worth it!

Filleting Rats

I've had a couple new babies as homework lately. In the middle of it all is Socrates... the water (fowl) owl.

But there's a new baby that everyone wanted to put down. I asked for an extension and agreed to do it if she was suffering too much after that...

When I brought her back to work, I was afraid. But Ms. Rogers lit up immediately, "Oh my GOD! She's so much better!"

She may be slow... but my girl will live!

It won't take it away.. but it helped a lot.

Socrates came home with me today. It always feels nice having him around. He's on the cabinets asleep right now. Earlier today we sat out at the creek with the kitties. My Mookee pigeons (a really neat breed) were flying and following us around while Terra Grackle rang phone sounds in his cage on the terrace. I'm glad to have the ones who want to be around me. It's comforting.

PS: New Orleans was enchanting as usual. I missed it.

Saturday we all went out to the country with 37 hawks and owls ready to be released. There has been a documentary being filmed by a very prominent photo journalist who came along for the ride.

I released a few guys.. but this one in particular was special.

His name is Dante:

He was found caught in a barbed wire fence, and had struggled so long that he badly bruised his wing, and implanted the wire into his neck and shoulder. We weren't sure he'd make it.

He picked up very nicely and began hunting as would the others.
His call was enchanting.

Now he returns to the wild...

And we... were amazed. XD

I used to ride to her house in the middle of the night. We'd create or just speak in rhythms of our own completions that would turn to compilations. We'd pretend it was all an instance. One of those of which was indifferent to everything else. And it was.

There was a time we'd float above every other thought. Above every other exaggeration. In between all the things we were supposed to behold as real. Invisible. No one could hurt us anymore. And in this, we were empowered; in a reluctant, nearly suicidal state. I always put her in front of me...

I have been addicted to Assassin's Creed lately. Beautifully done. However, I just (note the time right now) got stuck trying to climb a wall away from militants IN A BOX!!! All I could see was my head, and they were beating me to death! ; ;

I had to restart the sequence of course, but I photo documented the place holding the faulty clipping plane. I will be posting this when it's not 6 in the morning. >

My girlfriend at work (the wildlife rehabilitation center) has a brother who just suffered through leukemia. (I sort of relate, loosing my brother to schizophrenia). Her brother had recovered, or so we thought... but now he's in a severe remission. Last night she got up and sung a beautiful song. She nailed it. I wish I had footage.
